If you travel
enough, it's bound to happen to you eventually. Lost luggage is extremely
inconvenient, frustrating, and sometimes costly. Here are some methods on how
to decrease your chances of lost luggage.
Fly Direct: How to decrease your changes of lost luggage is to fly direct. By
having a direct flight, you reduce the number of times your luggage is handled.
Not having your luggage transferred from plane to plane greatly reduces the
chances that your luggage heads in the wrong direction.
Arrive Early: When
you narrowly make your flight, there is a good chance your luggage won't make
it at all. Arrive in plenty of time so that if your luggage has to make a few
pit-stops on the way to the plane, there's plenty of time for it to do so.
Use the Main Counter: Tempting as it may be to use the curb-side check-in, you are better
off using the main ticket counter. Instead of being moved from the curb to the
main counter, your luggage goes straight on the conveyor. Just one less
opportunity for it not to go to the right place!
Label Your Bags: Make sure your bags are labeled with your name, address, and phone number. If
the stickers/tags are ripped off, this may be the only way for the airline to
identify who the bag belongs to.
Remove Old Labels:
Remove all old airline stickers and any tags with old information on them.
Having dated information on your bag causes confusion and can cause your bag to
be mis-routed.
Include Your Itinerary: If your exterior tags are removed, having a printed copy of your
itinerary inside can help the airline identify your bags.
Check the Stickers:
After the counter agent prints and labels your luggage, ask them if you can
take a look. Make sure that they've put the correct stickers on them and that
the destination is correct. These agents are often multi-tasking and it's easy
for them to grab the wrong ones.
Make Your Bag Unique: Many "lost" bags aren't really lost, they're just grabbed by
the wrong person. Make your luggage unique so that someone doesn't take it by
accident. If you don't want to replace your luggage with a wild pattern, use
colorful luggage straps or handle wraps to make it stand apart from the rest!
Fly the Right Airlines: Some airlines have more of a history of losing luggage than others.
Do your research and fly airlines with a better track record of getting your
luggage to the right place.
